TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)_ One of the officers hit by a vehicle on I-70 Wednesday afternoon was out of the hospital Wednesday night, while the other was upgraded to fair condition.

A hospital spokesperson says Topeka Police K-9 officer Jason Harwood, a veteran of 10 and a half years, remained hospitalized, while KHP trooper was Kody Olson, a National Guard member who completed KHP training and was assigned to Shawnee County in January 2008, was treated for his injuries and released.

The accident around 1:45 pm shut down eastbound I-70 from MacVicar to Topeka Boulevard. The eastbound ramps at Fairlawn and Gage also were closed. The highway reopened just before 6:30 pm.

Topeka Police say TPD officers tried to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation, but the suspects took off. After a brief chase, they stopped the car in the Auburndale neighborhood and ran on foot, so the officers called for backup.

TPD says Harwood and Olson responded to the backup call. They were standing outside their vehicles which were parked on the shoulder of I-70, east of MacVicar, helping maintain a perimeter.

TPD says a van, unrelated to the chase, drove onto the shoulder of the highway, rear-ended the Topeka Police vehicle and hit the Highway Patrol vehicle. The van then spun around and hit the two officers.

TPD says the officers were knocked down the embankment, along with the KHP car and the van. The van landed on the driver’s side. Two people inside were able to escape from the vehicle through the passenger side.

Both officers and the two people in the van were taken to the hospital. The civilians were last reported in stable condition. The officers' injuries also were initially considered serious.

Two suspects from the chase were captured and are in custody.

The TPD unit that was hit carrried the markings of K9 officer, sparking a search for the police animal. However, they learned a short time later that Harwood did not have the K9 with him at the time - the animal was at home, in its kennel.

Thoughts and Prayers go out to the two civilans injured and also to the officers injured. Just a friendly reminder to all of you out there making opinionated comments... ANY accident is "unfortunate", probably why it's called an accident. It's a blessing that no one was killed and hopefully everyone injured will be ok. Shouldn't THAT where your focus be, "thoughts & prayers" for those invovled??? We all sure have become committed to being the "judge and jury" in everyone elses business, unaware of "all" details involved before spuewing our "own" opinionated views. Just for the record I happen to know these two civilans injured in the van and they are amazing people; kind, considerate, would never think of harming another. Obviously this article that I just read was very vague on "WHY" the van hit the patrol car on the shoulder. Something must of happened health wise causing the driver to do something like that. I'm just saying.

People need to move into the other lane as far away from emergency, maintenance, or disabled vehicles and they need to look ahead instead of at their stupid cell phones and remember their are other vehicles that need to get over in the other lane also. Slow down and pay attention to what is in front, behind and beside you. You are in such a hurry to get that cheeseburger or make that appointment and that is all you care about. You probably need to go on a diet anyway so focus on the road instead of your fat gut. Wake up people and pay attention.
