The Future of Highland Park High School

Concerned parents...teachers and community members met at Highland Park High School Monday morning to address rumors of the school closing.

As of right now Highland Park High School will not close.

USD 501 members are working on a model in order to gain a grant. The model would look at schools that are in similar predicaments nationwide with similar low performance issues.

Word of a public meeting sparked concern...but school leaders quickly worked to calm those fears.

Highland Park High School closing is not a target option in the school district. However a high school improvement grant is...which could be anywhere between 50,000 to 2 million dollars for 3 years.

Dale Cushinberry, principal of Highland Park High School says, "between now and May 1st we're going to be working very hard ..working on model. One of the things the grant insists is that you have a comprehensive model. Try to figure out every way we can enhance the model so scores come up and children are learning."

Many at the meeting see this as an opportunity to do wonders not only with Highland Park but in the school district.

John Class of 62 It's not the school, it's easy to point out whats wrong or maybe why they did not succeed. Children emulate the parents, socioeconomic disadvantage parents generally have children that except substandard work as the norm, that is there parents do. Sadly this problem starts at home and ends there. I had a great counselor, they are on the short list when it comes to school hiring. She said stay focused and don't ever give up on your dreams. The best thing that was ever said to me. No college but owned my photography business for 34 years with nine employees it's not the building.

I graduated from HP in the late 70's. They were the 3 worst years of my life, too bad the school had not closed before I had to go there!
