Topeka, KAN. (WIBW)--Fighting cancer and improving the overall health of Kansans is the goal of a bill signed into law Friday. Gov. Mark Parkinson signed the clean indoor air act. The bill bans smoking and makes the act of smoking in public places throughout Kansas a crime.
The clean indoor air bill signed by Gov. Mark Parkinson Friday morning means the end of an almost five year fight in the legislature.
"This is the hardest fight I’ve ever been in, especially politically. It was an uphill battle the whole time,” said republican Sen. David Wysong of Mission Hills.
The bill bans smoking in public areas—including bars but it doesn't affect hotel rooms, casinos, nursing homes or tobacco shops.
Supporters said it is a major step in the right direction for Kansas. Opponents have said a ban violates the rights of private business owners. The clean indoor air bill takes affect July 1.

There is such a thing as an electronic cigarette. These are sent with a card and are perfectly legal. You do get the the taste of nicotine but no tar or anything else. I found out through the doctor. If we are going to out smoking I think we should outlaw drinking as well. People get drunk and drive and are going to kill someone sooner than a smoker. Liqour also ruins lifes. People who drink get their license suspended and drive anyway. Kansas does not want to do anything about this. I do not drink but I do have my electronic cigarette as do alot of my friends. I say if you are going to outlaw the cigarette smoking lets out alcohol after all fair is fair.
Thank you, Governor Parkinson. We needed that. We are looking forward to breathing more freely in July.
