Topeka (WIBW) - Parents facing legal problems over child support payments have a chance to clear them up.

YoungWilliams Child Support Services and the Shawnee County District Court Trustee will host an Amnesty Day March 25 at the Shawnee County Courthouse, 200 SE 7th Street.

Amnesty Day is an opportunity for parents with outstanding warrants on their child support cases to clear their warrants in exchange for a payment against their child support and a current paystub. The Amnesty day is for anyone who has an active warrant on a child support case with a Shawnee County court order number.

To participate, parents will need to appear in person. Individuals with last names starting with A-MART should appear between 9am and noon. Individuals with last names starting with MAS-Z should appear between 1pm and 3pm.

Parents will be expected to make a payment toward their child support of at least $250 per active warrant and produce a copy of a paystub as proof of employment. All payments must be in the form of a money order or a cashier’s check. Cash will not be accepted.

Parents will also be ordered back to a new court date.

YoungWilliams Child Support Services and the Shawnee County District Court Trustee’s Office say offering Amnesty Day is a good will effort to the community. They say Shawnee County, like many of the counties across the country, is feeling the effects of the economy, and Amnesty Day has proven to be a program that helps both the payor parent and the parent who receives the child support.
