Topeka (WIBW) - Area groups are being urged to add "recycling" to their list when planning their next event.
As part of the Pepsi Refresh grant program, Keep America Beautiful Topeka/Shawnee County is partnering with Pepsi Cola Bottling of Topeka for the Lend A Bin program.
The program will allow civic groups to check out and borrow portable recycling bins for their special events.
KAB organizers say many of community events offer beverages in aluminum cans or plastic bottles that could be recycled, saving many cubic yards in our landfills.
In addition to the bins, clearstream recycle bags will be provided free of charge. Groups will need to pick up and return the bins, and transport their recyclables to the nearest recycling location.
KAB says recycling is not only important for the environment, it also saves money and countless non-renewable natural resources. More than 75 percent of material that goes to landfills could have been recycled.
