EMPORIA, Kansas - A familiar voice to Lyon County high schoolers and sports fans was killed in an accident Wednesday evening, according to KVOE, a radio station in Emporia.

KVOE reports Hartford Athletic Director Don Roberts died in the one-vehicle accident on K-99 at Road 70 in south Lyon County. The Lyon County Sheriff's Office responded to the accident around 6:30 p.m. It is investigating details of the crash.

The sheriff's office reports the vehicle involved was a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Roberts was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene by the Lyon County deputy coroner. Roberts was taken to Topeka for an autopsy.

Roberts was a longtime counselor and educator, and the public address voice for the Lyon County League Tournament. He also sang the national anthem at several Kansas City Royals games, according to KVOE.

KVOE reports USD 252 South Lyon County is making additional counselors available for students. Funeral arrangements are pending.

ummmm....I would venture a guess that WIBW was under the impression that Mr. Roberts' son had been told or they would have posted something like "names have not been released pending notification of relatives" (as per normal). I too knew this individual for over 20 yrs. I found out on facebook......not due to anyone being malicious. Due to the fact that is where I spend most of my time.

How inconsiderate... Show some respect... I personally know this great man and some of his family was not told yet, like his son, when the first post was made... Consider yourself in thier position... learning of your fathers death from the news, Facebook, or any other way than from your family... how sad...
