A 15-foot tall bronze statue in Lawrence honors those who died in the Civil War.
Crews installed the statue Tuesday just north of downtown. It shows a half-man, half-phoenix rising from the fire and will be formally dedicated July 3.
There were 450 Douglas County soldiers, emergency personnel, and other victims who died in the civil war.
A foundation of residents came up with the idea four years ago; they wanted a single place to remember people who had given their lives to serve others.
