Supporters Ring Up Sales Tax Solution

Topeka (WIBW) - The idea of having people pay more at the store to help the state make ends meet was up for discussion at the Statehouse Thursday.

The House Tax Committee opened hearings on Gov. Mark Parkinson's proposal for a one-percent sales tax increase. It's part of his plan to get the state out of a $400 million budget hole.

Opponents argue it would hit lower income people hardest, but supporters say it's better than the alternative of further cuts to agencies and programs already hard hit.

K-12 education is among items that have absorbed cuts. Mark Tallman of the Kansas Association of School Boards says cutting further education and social services would hurt people more than an increase in sales tax.

The committee heard only from supporters Thursday. Opponents will testify Tuesday, Jan. 26.

The sales tax increase is HB 2475.
