Topeka (WIBW) - Good news and bad news about getting Topeka's streets cleared with another round of snow expected later this week.
City spokesman David Bevens says five of the city's 14 large plow trucks are out of service.
Three of them should be repaired by Wednesday, but that's not all the city is short. Three of the city's six pickup trucks and four snow graders also are out of commission.
Bevens says some of the trucks have malfunctioning salt spreaders or plows, others have engine or transmission issues.

I have also heard they are out of salt and sand. Come on didn't this happen last year. Isn't there a maintenance man at the equipment barn? Does any of the officials have any foresight to order more salt and sand than the previous year? It is time for better group of persons to handle operations. And why cann't there be specific emergency routes to be cleared and kept cleared?

Unfortunately its not just the snow to contend with theres also the never ending pot hole problem. These can and do serious damage to vehicles. Ever try to spot them at night? Good luck. Whoever runs the stret department should be fired. However as we all know (especially them) no matter how poor the job is done its a real challenge to get rid of these people.

the condition of Topeka's roads is a complete farce. i was visiting some wealthier relatives in town for New Year's and ALL the roads around them were clear while my street, near downtown and the Expocenter(a significantly poorer neighborhood), was left completely snow-covered and icy. indeed, the whole City Council, City Manager, et al. need to be done away with. those guys have put their own private interests over the needs of this city for far too long.
