Topeka, KAN. (WIBW)--City officials put the brakes on smoking inside Topeka’s bars, restaurants and most public places this month but one Oakland bar still has customers lighting up while they drink.
People at Hot Pockets bar can enjoy a cigarette while they drink but owners said that's because smokers aren't really smoking in the bar. Once inside the bar on Seward avenue, it appears to be just that…a bar. That’s not all that’s inside the building though. Jim Sulwaski owns a smoke shop right next to the bar's counter, which is owned by his wife.
The city's smoking ban states that retail tobacco shops are exempt from the law and the only thing separating the two businesses is a long piece of duct tape. That allows customers the ability to purchase drinks then sit in the smoke shop's area to light up.
