Issues At White Lakes

Topeka, KAN. (WIBW)--A storm of controversy is brewing over White Lakes Mall and we investigated a few viewer complaints.

Customers heading to the D.M.V. annex at White Lakes are putting up with some issues, including temporary closure.

"Pure disappointment and a little mad,” Kelli Coffman said after she found out the D.M.V. annex was closed Friday.

County treasurer Larry Wilson shut down the office Wednesday through Friday and more than just the customers have noticed.

"Customer service ought to be number one priority for treasurer's office, customer service is being affected by decisions Mr. Wilson is making and conditions people have to endure when visiting the annex,” Shawnee County Commission Chairman Vic Miller said.

Miller also said Wilson has given conflicting statements--citing both the weather and redevelopment work for the closure.

"Due to conditions of facilities and staff availability, we had no recourse but to close the annex of White Lakes,” Shawnee County treasurer Larry Wilson said.

Another major concern for county officials is the building’s condition. It’s been weeks since management turned off the heat in the common areas and the entrance buttons for people with disabilities are deactivated.

"Never had this problem before with past owners and management,” annex office manager Marsha Ralston said.

Kansas Commercial Real Estate Services is managing White Lakes. One its owners, Ken Schmanke told us they would keep the heat off while the mall is in a transitional phase. As for the disabled buttons, Wilson said they already notified management but Schmanke claims he just learned of that issue Thursday and is investigating.
