A mysterious four-foot robot that prompted police to shut down an area around a Curtis State Office Building on the Capitol grounds in Topeka has not been found to be a hazard.
Kansas Highway Patrol Lieutenant John Eichkorn says maintenance workers notified authorities about the robot Tuesday morning because no one received permission to display it.
The Topeka Police bomb squad was called mid-morning to bring its own robot to check out the mechanized visitor.
Kansas Highway Patrol troopers also were called in to block off streets around the area and state workers in surrounding buildings were put on lock down and warned to stay away form windows.
"I thought locking down the building was a good idea who knows what they were encountering it's better to be safe then sorry," said state worker, Steve Roach.
Eichkorn says the robot was removed and workers were allowed to return to their desks. He says investigators determined the sculpture was not hazardous. They did find a signature on it, which he says they're trying to track down.
Anyone with information on who might have left the device should call Capitol Police at 785-296-3420.
He says he couldn't speculate whether any charges or citations might come out of the situation. He says regulations regarding placing displays on Capitol grounds do not appear to have been followed.
