Governor Kathleen Sebelius is placing Kansas squarely against the genocide in the Darfur region of the African nation of Sudan. The Governor on Monday ordered Kansas to stop investing in any companies whose profits benefit the government in Sudan.

That total is only eight companies, less than one percent of the entire portfolio contributing to the state's pension funds. It is a small amount, but was hailed by a Sudanese delegation visiting the Statehouse as a large gesture and show of support for their cause. Kansas joins 11 other states in divesting its resources from Sudanese profits.

The group told Sebelius they hope someday Washington will follow the lead of the states, and that there will be change in the Sudanese government, allowing their people to live in peace after 20 years of war and bloodshed.
