NORFOLK, Va. (AP) _ A Navy lawyer from Kansas was found guilty
of communicating secret information about Guantanamo Bay detainees.
Forty-one-year-old Lieutenant Commander Matthew Diaz of Topeka
was also convicted yesterday of three charges of leaking information to an unauthorized person.
A Navy court-martial in Virginia acquitted him of one charge. Diaz could face up to 14 years in prison at sentencing, which begins Friday.
Prosecutors said Diaz mailed a human-rights lawyer a printout of
the names of detainees in an unsigned Valentine's Day card.
Defense attorneys said the information was not labeled classified and that Diaz had no reason to think the document could be used against the United States.
