NORFOLK, Va. (AP) _ A Navy lawyer from Kansas goes on trial Monday on charges of passing classified information about Guantanamo Bay detainees to an unauthorized person.

Lieutenant Commander Matthew Diaz of Topeka could face more than 36 years in prison if convicted. The complaint against Diaz does not specify what type of information he's accused of passing.

But a Navy spokeswoman has described it as a document containing names and other identifying data about Guantanamo detainees. The Navy has declined to identify the recipient but said the individual notified federal authorities.

The 41-year-old Diaz worked as a staff judge advocate at Guantanamo Bay. The charges say the incidents took place from December 2004 to February 2005.
