At least nine people are confirmed dead after a deadly tornado hit Greensburg last night around 9:45 p.m.

Authorities say the tornado was at least a mile and a half wide.

Sharon Watson, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Adjutant General's
Department, said the victims include eight in Kiowa County and one in
Stafford County.

The Pratt County Sheriff says one of those victims, a man, died near Hopewell when the tornado destroyed his home.

Much of the downtown of the Kiowa County town has been leveled.

A large wedge-shaped tornado hit the town of 1,600 around 9:45 p.m. Friday.

Greensburg is in a search and rescue mode and officials are evacuating the city.

Several people are unaccounted for, so officials are clearing the city in order to go door to door.

The city administrator says Greensburg has suffered 100 percent damage.

The Red Cross has set up a shelter in Haviland at Barclay College. People can call this phone number to find out the status of loved ones - 620-672-3651.

If people want to help with recovery, the Red Cross is encouraging donations, or volunteers can check in at 114 N Main Street in Pratt. They will likely be assigned to the shelter areas.

Large brick buildings were shattered, trees are down, and pieces of roofs and debris are scattered across city streets.

KAKE's Nick VinZant spoke with some citizens who report seeing damage at the Kiowa County Memorial Hospital at Grant and Walnut, including a roof collapse in one wing of the building.

VinZant has seen significant damage with dozens of homes and buildings either damaged or destroyed.

KAKE storm chaser Lanny Dean reports a motel destroyed on the West side of Greensburg.

Large farm equipment has also been destroyed. Dean's First Cam captured the wedge-shaped tornado as it roared through Kiowa County.

55 people have been transported to Pratt Regional Hospital. In Wichita, four critical patients are being treated. Hutchinson is also receiving patients.

At Western Plains, the hospital received 9 patients with injuries, 3 were minor and 6 are still being treated form more serious injuries.

Greensburg is a town of about 1,600 people and is the county seat of Kiowa County. Power is out for the entire community, and multiple power lines are down

Rescuers in Greensburg pulled 30 people from a collapsed hospital.

Law enforcement from surrounding counties are helping.

The Kansas National Guard has also sent assistance.

If you give any donation, your money has better vaule with Salvation Army,or Knight of Columbus. Than with the Red Cross. This is from past experience (2001)
