New Medicare Phone Scam Warns Comr. Praeger

Caller promises new Medicare benefit to help pay for prescription drugs and then asks for Medicare Number and bank account number.

Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger is warning Kansans of a new scam targets that Medicare beneficiaries, promising them a monthly stipend to help them pay for their prescription drugs. The caller claims that the new program provides enrollees with $200 or $150 per month for the drugs.

The caller goes on to to say that a new Medicare card will be sent that contains proof of the new benefits, then asks for the recipient to confirm their Medicare Number and bank account number.

The caller is said to have a foreign accent and has used the last name "Jones" along with the representative ID# DJ1049. The caller has been known to offer 866 area code numbers for return calls if the beneficiary wishes to enroll at a later date.

Comr. Praeger reminds Kansans that Medicare representatives will never ask for a bank account number over the phone.
