OLATHE, Kan. (AP) _ A northeast Kansas businessman who admitted
defrauding investors in an Arizona housing project is sentenced to ten years in prison.
On Tuesday, 58-year-old Michael P. Schaefer of Leawood is due back in Johnson County District Court to enter a plea in a fraud case brought in 2006. The new charges involve Schaefer's alleged activities in May 2005, while he was free on bond.
In the first case, Schaefer was accused of taking ten million dollars from 150 investors by promising to double or triple their money. Officials say it was one of the largest fraud cases ever prosecuted in Johnson County.
Under terms of the sentence, Schaefer must also begin paying one million dollars in restitution when he's out of prison.
