Assistive Technology for Kansans is celebrating Earth Day by offering recycling of sorts.
The group is setting up a site to collect electronic communication devices and medical equipment. Items like wheelchairs, scooters and lifts are requested. You can bring those items to the south side of the state Capitol building in Topeka from 10:30 am until 2 pm Friday.
The group's Kansas Equipment Exchange program has recycled items worth $1.3 million since October 2002. Most of the items go to people who do not have medical insurance.
If you can't make it to the Statehouse Friday, you can call 800-526-3648 to arrange for pickup.
The collection is part of a slew of Earth Day activities planned for the Statehouse Friday. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is hosting its 2nd Annual Earth Day Fair. The event begins at 10 am with a welcome from Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, and will include unveiling of the "Kansas Green Team" logo by KDHE Secretary Rod Bremby at noon. Other events include live entertainment, a composting display and drop-off stations for recyclable items including cans, bottles, rechargeable batteries and toner cartridges. E-waste like cell phones, computers and printers will also be accepted.
Manhattan will also get in on the Earth Day act. The company Document Resources Facility is offering free document shredding from 9 am to noon Saturday. Their facility is located at 414 S. 5th St. in Manhattan. The event recognizes Earth Day and offers people a way to protect their identity.
