TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Governor Sebelius today signed a series of bills designed to cut taxes for some Kansans and phase out a tax on businesses.
The cuts include eliminating the fee that businesses pay to operate in Kansas, saving them approximately $135 million over the next five years.
In addition, some senior citizens would see their Social Security benefits be exempt from state income taxes, while others would get a larger refund on their property taxes if they qualify.
Another change would increase the earned income tax credit for poor, working Kansans, who now will be able to claim 17 percent of the federal income tax credit that the state matches.
