Topeka (WIBW) - A full house turned out at the Shawnee County Commission chambers Thursday morning. Most people in the crowd came to tell commissioners they wanted to keep seeing the treasurer's office on their election ballots.

Commissioners held a public hearing on a resolution to appoint the treasurer rather than have the job elected, as it is now.

It comes as current treasurer Larry Wilson is under fire for issues like not reconciling monthly bank statements for more than a year and issuing tags to people owing delinquent taxes.

Commissioner Vic Miller says appointing would ensure qualifications and improve oversite. He says part of the problem is that commissioners don't have much authority over the office.

Miller also said residents have asked him to do something about problems at the treasurers office and he's doing what he's allowed to do.

Others say elections hold people accountable.

Ben Scott was among those speaking. He says it's a government by the people for the people, so the public should be able to elect who it wants for that position.

Joe Ledbetter says it's not about the person holding the position. In fact, he says he doesn't support Larry Wilson and doesn't feel Wilson is doing a good job. However, Ledbetter says that's not a reason to stop giving people the opportunity to vote for the position.

Commissioners haven't yet scheduled a vote on the issue. Even if they approve the resolution, it would go to a public vote.
