NICODEMUS, Kan. (AP) _ Archaeologists are looking for a few good
shovels. The Kansas Archaeology Training Program in June is planning to excavate earthen dugouts built 130 years ago by the early settlers of Nicodemus in central Kansas.
The town was founded in late 1877 by black settlers recruited from Kentucky.
Amateur archeologists or people with an interest in history can help researchers dig at the site once they register and pay a fee.
Scientists say they hope details found in the dugouts give them insight into the settlers' lifestyle and settlement patterns. Settlers lived in the dugouts while better housing was built.
