A blue ribbon is worn for national child abuse awareness. Today, I went over to Wal Mart and talked to a group that helps abused children.
Bikers Against Child Abuse were at Wal Mart today handing out fliers and cooking up a storm to promote their cause.
Shaun "Ace" Bennett, The VP of the Kansas Chapter of BACA said, "We give the children a vest like ours with a patch on the back and pictures of them with us, and basically we want them to know that there's somebody in their court that's gonna stand behind them and take care of them."
Bikers Against Child Abuse have 4 different levels of intervention, from simply befriending a child and coming to their house, to even appearing with them in court or walking them to school.
One thing the bikers won't do is go after the abuser. They act as a shield, helping the child feel safe.
Jordan, a boy at Wal Mart, said, "if they were with me, I'd feel safer."
Bennett said, "They come out and run out and give us a big hug, and it's just amazing, brings tears to your eyes...when this kid grabs onto you, latches onto you and doesn't want to let go."
They may not be knights in shining armor, but for frightened children, strength and protection rides on a motorcycle and wears a leather vest.
