WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Two senior U.S. diplomats will travel to Myanmar as part of dialogue with the country's military junta, the State Department said Friday.

Assistant Secretary Kurt Campbell and his deputy, Scot Marciel, will visit Myanmar -- also known as Burma -- Tuesday and Wednesday, deputy department spokesman Robert Wood told reporters. They are expected to meet with senior government officials and members of the opposition, including Aung San Suu Kyi, he said.

Campbell will be the most senior U.S. official to visit the Southeast Asian nation in 14 years, since Madeleine Albright traveled there as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. He will be continuing talks he held with senior Myanmar officials in New York last month.

His visit comes after a lengthy review of U.S. policy toward Myanmar. Last month the Obama administration said it would deal directly with the country's military leadership in an effort to bring about democratic reforms, saying the Bush administration's policy of isolating the regime did not work.

Sen. Jim Webb, D-Virginia, who has pushed for direct talks with the country's rulers, traveled to Myanmar in August and secured the release of American John Yettaw, who was imprisoned after swimming across a lake to get to Suu Kyi's home in Yangon.

Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, has spent more than 13 of the past 19-plus years in custody since her National League for Democracy party won 1990 elections, a victory not accepted by the military junta. Successive U.S. administrations pushed for her release.
