TOPEKA -- Neighbors living alongside Central Park Community Center and its playground call it a danger zone, but still can't believe 34-year old Marini McKnight was shot and killed there Monday afternoon.

McKnight was coming home from a Topeka grocery store, when, with grocery bags still her hand, she was gunned down during a fight outside the community center. But neighbors knew Marini as "an angel and a hero" who often broke up gang fights in the neighborhod. She's being described as a strong-voiced woman who jumped into action planning events to raise money for funerals of fight victims, or neighbors relatives killed in local violence.

Now they say they will help in planning her funeral.

Topeka Police say the victim was shot at 3:40pm during an after-school fistfight that moved to the park area. It's estimated up to 40 teens and young adults were in the brawl, with other students walking back from school were warned to stay away from the fight. Since McKnight was intentionally shot several times, McKnight might have been targeted by the gunman. But police have called McKnight "uninvolved" in the fight that took her life.

They're searching for a 20-year old black male, about 5'9" who drove away from the scene in a four-door, light blue model car. Your tips are requested by calling Crimestoppers at 234-0007. A tip leading to an arrest could bring a $2,000 reward.
