Prize Patrol Hits Area Schools

Topeka (WIBW) - The prize patrol was making the rounds of the Topeka Public School district Friday morning.

Teachers recently applied for grants from the district's Foundation. Friday, Foundation Executive Director Pamela Johnson-Betts and USD 501 Superintendent Kevin Singer turned up in class to "surprise" the winners.

28 teachers received grants totalling $22,000. Most of the grants were for under $500. They support a variety of projects, like outdoor education or supplies for unique math or science lessons.

"With the funding cuts, less money to districts, we're concerned," Johnson-Betts said. "We want to provide the staff additional things that allow them to continue the innovations and creativity to help our students."
