Wichita (KAKE) - The Sedgwick County Sheriff said a deputy who suffered a gunshot wound in the 3600 block of S. Rock Rd has died. The shooting location was near McConnell Air Force Base.

Sheriff Bob Hinshaw said the deputy was responding to a larceny call when he was shot at 11:51 a.m. Monday.

Sheriff Hinshaw said the suspect is believed to be in his 20s and was recently paroled. Hinshaw said the shooting could possibly have been a setup. The suspect was shot after a brief chase on foot near the scene around 5:30 p.m.. He was taken to Wesley Medical Center where he died at 6:10 this evening. The suspect's name has not yet been released.

The deputy has been identified as 26-year-old Brian S. Etheridge. He died at 4:20 this afternoon with family at his side. Etheridge leaves behind a wife and young child.

A candlelight vigil is scheduled for the Warren Theater in Old Town at 9:00 p.m.

Sheriff Hinshaw said Etheridge's time with Sedgwick County was his first law enforcement job. He has been on the force for one year and two months.

He is the first Sedgwick County Sheriff's officer killed since Sgt. Kenneth Snider was killed in 1997.

Gov. Mark Parkinson released a statement on Etheridge's death late Monday saying, “I am deeply saddened by the death of Sedgwick County Sheriff's Deputy Brian Etheridge. He died in the line of duty, serving and protecting his community, making the ultimate sacrifice.

“This is a shocking and tragic reminder of the risk that law enforcement officers face every day in serving our state – we can never thank them enough for all that they do, it truly is a debt we cannot repay.

“My thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Etheridge’s family, friends and fellow officers. I join all other Kansans in mourning this incredible loss.”
