Lawrence -- It appears the KU athletic department isn't one big, happy family. Members of the Jayhawk basketball and football teams have been involved in three separate incidences within 18 hours of one another. It started around 6:30 on Tuesday evening.

KU point guard Tyshawn Taylor was "treated and released" from Lawrence Memorial Hospital, a nursing supervisor told WIBW late Tuesday evening following an incident in front of the Burge Union on campus at KU. Taylor stated on his facebook page that he dislocated his thumb, an injury that could keep him out up to four weeks.

WIBW has obtained a police report from Kansas University Public Safety Office on the incident that sent Taylor to the hospital. According to the report Jacob Breech, a witness, said "Members of the KU football team and KU basketball team had been 'baiting' each other, they had escalated into taunting and shouting and then fighting." Breech could not identify any specific football or basketball players.

The report also quoted a second witness identified as Tiffany Nichols, who was working at the Hawk Shop inside the Burge Union, as saying "She heard yelling in the hallway and saw a bunch of people running through the hallway to get outside the building."

Another witness, who spoke with WIBW's Matt Blanchette, said he saw the tail end of the skirmish, when police arrived everybody started running.

Sgt. John Dietz, who filed the report, said "I was unable to find anyone who wanted to make a police report." No charges have been filed.

KUsports.com reported that Tyshawn Taylor was involved in the skirmish between football and basketball players on Tuesday evening shortly after 6:30. Identities of the others involved were not available. University of Kansas Associate AD Jim Marchiony told 13 Sports Tuesday night: "We're aware of reports of an incident, and we're fact-finding as we speak."

KUsports.com also reports that there were other altercations following the one that sent Taylor to the hospital. The report says that police were called to Jayhawk Towers around 10:25 Tuesday evening to disperse a crowd of 20 or so people.

There was another incident outside of Wecoe Hall beginning at shortly before 10a.m. Wednesday morning. A witness told WIBW she saw several basketball players, including the Morris twins, Sherron Collins, Tyshawn Taylor were visibly agitated. She told Matt Blanchette that (assistant basketball coach) Joe Dooley and other "handlers" took the basketball players away into the building.

Witnesses told the Daily Kansan that they saw one of the Morris twins push a football player down stairs outside of Budig hall (the football player was caught by a teammate). Shorty after, several pairs of basketball and football players began fighting. Witnesses, and pictures provided to the Kansan, identify the Morris twins, Mario Little, Sherron Collins, Tyshawn Taylor, Brady Morningstar, Travis Releford, Tyrel Reed, Thomas Robinson and Elijah Johnson at the gathering, as well as Dezmon Briscoe and Chris Harris, from the football team.

KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little released the following statement on Wednesday afternoon: “I have consulted with Lew Perkins and share his disappointment regarding the recent incidents involving a small number of our student athletes. They need to realize their profiles make them representatives of the university off the court and field, as well as on it, and that KU has high expectations for its students. I appreciate the quick response by the athletic director and university staff and the strong statement from the teams’ leaders.”

Athletics Director Lew Perkins said Wednesday morning: “We are aware of an incident that occurred last evening that involved members of the football and men’s basketball teams. I am disappointed that some of our student-athletes put themselves in this position, and it’s something that I am taking very seriously.

“I continue to gather facts about this incident, and I plan to address this issue personally with both teams. I also know that Bill Self and Mark Mangino are working together to address it, and I am confident that they will handle the situation appropriately with their teams.

“We will handle any discipline regarding this incident internally, and we will have no further comment about it.”

Taylor posted some telling information on his facebook page leading up to the original incident on Tuesday evening. Here is a timeline of Taylor's posts: 11:12a.m. Tuesday - “keep my name out ya’ mouth for you get smacked in it” 11:44a.m. - “never get outta character .. I’m always a G about it.” to which Taylor's teammate Markieff Morris responded "say no more cuz." at 11:45a.m. 3:13p.m. - “(racial slur)s be muggin me ..you know I’m mugging back.” Approximately midnight Wednesday- “real (racial slur)s do real things .. point plankn.” 12:10a.m. “I got a dislocated finger ..from throwing a punch ..so don’t let the news paper gas yall up aite.”

Statement from Representatives of the KU Football and Men’s Basketball Teams

Kansas Athletics Director Lew Perkins met with the football and men’s basketball teams Wednesday afternoon in the Anderson Family Football Complex. Following the meeting, selected representatives from both teams (listed below) collectively released the following statement:

“We realize that over the past couple of days we’ve let a disagreement between a few guys grow bigger than it ever should have. We’re embarrassed about that.

“Now we want everyone know that we have met and talked it out. We realize we’re all Jayhawks. We’re proud of what both teams have accomplished.

“We appreciate the support these teams give each other. We’ll be in the stands rooting for each other like we always have.

“We all wear KANSAS on our uniforms, and we’re proud of that. We need to act like it. We’ve met; we’re all on the same page, and we will move forward together. The football team is ready to get back to work, focused on Saturday’s game against Southern Mississippi, and the basketball team will continue to prepare for another great season.”
