TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ House members are linking the theft of scrap metal to methamphetamine trafficking.
They passed a bill Monday 122-to-0 to regulate scrap metal sales.
Law enforcement officials have told legislators that they're seeing more cases in which people steal scrap metal, then sell it to scrap dealers, to raise money to buy meth.
Sellers would either have to accept checks from dealers or present government-issued ID containing their names and addresses.
Scrap metal dealers also would have to keep information about who sells them scrap and make it available to law enforcement officials when asked.
The House vote sent the measure to the Senate.
