Ottawa, Kan. (KCTV) - Fast-moving storms took their toll on eastern Kansas Wednesday afternoon.
Winds topping 70-miles per hour blew over big rigs on Interstate 35 near Ottawa in Franklin County.
Several buidlings also lost their roofs, including an apartment building and a Village Inn Restaurant. People were briefly trapped in the restaurant but authorities report no one was injured.
Ottawa's airport also suffered heavy damage. Small planes were strewn about the wreckage of buildings that once sheltered them.
Farther south, authorities in Bourbon County say the windows of
nearly every home in the small town of Bronson were damaged by hail
and wind.
The Lyon-Coffey Electric Cooperative reported the storms left 800 customers without power. Utility officials said crews were working to restore power, but it might take some time due to man utility poles being toppled. In particular, they said KCP&L lost power to the Welda substation, and, at 7pm Wednesday, believed it would be off several hours.
Additional crews from Butler Rural (El Dorado), Radiant Electric (Fredonia) and LJEC (McLouth) were called in to assist the power restoration effort.
