500 Marched For Babies In Downtown Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Each year lots of people show out for an event that benefits the little ones.

About 500 people were walking for the babies at Saturday morning's March Of Dimes March For Babies at the capitol.

The walk is the largest fundraiser for March Of Dimes in the Topeka area.

Teams could choose between a one-mile route and a five-mile route that looped around Kansas Avenue, and then they enjoyed lunch and activities back at the capitol steps.

Although the weather prevented more people from walking than the organization would've hoped, the event was still a success.

"This year is the firstyear we've done it here at the capitol and we all thought this was going to be a great place to have the event," Chair of Topeka March For Babies Diane Loiselle said. "Other than the weather, it's a little bit cold, but other than that it's been a great, great event."

Topeka raised about $150,000 for the organization. It will go toward programs in the area that help moms have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies.
