Topeka, KANSAS (WIBW) -- State budget cuts will have a big impact on K-through-12 education. It will be cut by $39 Million in Kansas. It brings the per-student numbers to 2006 funding levels.
Educators are faced with possibly having larger class sizes and fewer dollars, something they fear could hurt student achievement.
School districts across the state are trying to avoid cutting people, or doing anything that would have a negative impact on student achievement. They do feel, however, that higher funds go hand-in-hand with higher achievement.
Topeka 501 anticipated $2.5 Million in cuts, but must now find an additional $500,000.

I work as a para in special education. Keystone Learning center as cut our hours and we did not get a raise in 2009 a tiny .14 cent an hour raise this year and no raise next year. We have been cut to the bone, it is time for the teachers to take some of the brunt of these cuts. Paras are in the classrooms all day without a "plan" time and we get absolutely no respect. We work with students just as much, if not more than the teachers do. Teachers have a union that is taking care of them, they will be fine. It's the support people we are going to be hurt the most.
Keep the teachers and trim down the number of aides and secretaries. Superintendents should take a cut in pay along with a few principals. Leave the teachers alone!
Why did the state cut education, but we are still spending millions on the state house???
