Topeka (WIBW) - It will be several weeks before people know how much money they might get back from Westlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
The cemetery's manager, Assistant Shawnee County Counselor Shawn Leisinger, says the county received 800 to 900 applications for refunds.
Those applicants all bought prepaid plans from the cemetery's former owner before the Attorney General's office gave control to the county. The action followed complaints over upkeep of the grounds. It was then discovered the former owner didn't have assets to cover the prepaid plans.
Leisinger says staff will review the applications, cross-check them with available records and resolve any issues. He anticipates checks will be sent in late July or early August.
There's approximately $150,000 to divide among the applicants.
