Topeka, KS (WIBW) There was some drama on the steps outside city hall Monday afternoon and it was all about the Topeka City Manager Norton Bonaparte.

Members of the Topeka NAACP chapter organized a gathering and it got heated at times.

One concerned citizen asked the first question after the groups opening statements.

"I'm asking you what he's done for the poor in Topeka."

It was designed to be a sole showing of support for Bonaparte, but opponents wanted their say as well.

One citizen shot back at the Bonaparte attacker saying, "I live in city council district 3. There has been no work done there and I hold Sylvia Ortiz accountable for that."

The NAACP came out in support of Bonaparte in the wake of recent criticism from Councilman John Alcala who has called for the firing of Bonaparte saying he has cost the city money and been an ineffective leader.

John Nave with the NAACP said that Bonaparte can't please everybody. You can't do everything that everyone asks. He says communication is key and the City Manager is the CEO of the city, but he needs the help of all of those in the city to make him and the city a success.

NAACP Chapter President Ben Scott said they support what he's done and think he's done a commendable job.

Bonaparte told us through Topeka Spokesperson David Bevens that he appreciates all the support he has received.

One ?.....Would the NAACP support what he's done and think he's done a commendable job if he was a White man. Seems to me they need to realize what he's cost Topeka and quit supporting him based on his color.

Wouldn't the 1.5 million dollars he is paid do alot to help with the debt we are in? He hasn't done enough for what he is paid.
