(Meriden, KS) -- Jefferson County officials are on the lookout for someone that got into Jefferson West Middle School Monday morning.
A janitor called authorities when she said she saw a man with a backpack in the school well before school started before 6am Monday.
The person and backpack raised concerns so the sheriff's office says they delayed school for an hour while they used a bomb dog to sweep the school, then asked teachers to check their classrooms.
No one found anything and school resumed Monday morning at about 8:30.
Parents were sent this note from school officials:
"Early this morning a custodian discovered someone in the Middle School who should not have been there. The police were called and the building was searched. The students and staff remained outside until the all clear was given at 8:15am. Everyone is safe and school has resumed as usual."
This comes after another odd incident on Friday - the same janitor told officials she was in a cleaning closet that morning, also before school, when someone barricaded her inside. No word if that was the same man the janitor saw Monday.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office asks anyone that might have seen a man in or around Jefferson West Middle School Monday morning to call the sheriff's office at 785-863-2765. The unknown person was seen wearing dark clothes and a dark backpack.

My child is a Jeff West student and as a parent no I do not think that this school is very good at all. I do have the facts, and still think that it has problems. Given the events around the United States that is happening in schools I do not think that Jeff West or The authorities have the means or knowledge to keep our children safe. There are also other issues that deeply distrub me for this school being out in the country it should be better than what it is. Sincerely, A District Mother

As a district student, Jeff West does have some issues. If they were searching for a bomb wouldn't you think they would back those kids WAY BACK from the school instead of letting them just stand outside the door. If there was a bomb that blew, standing outside the door would not have done them any good! Denied the opportunity of attending Jeff West??? Are you kidding me lady, you don't go here so ZIP IT!!!!!!!!

Just so you know, I agree that the situation was under control and safe well before kids were there. I was there dropping my kid off and although I was a littled concerned I learned first hand that the correct "process" was taking place. The person who insinuates JW has "issues" is most likely one who doesn't have "all the facts!" Don't make your opinion known until you have the facts! You (person who said JW has issues)must be one who was denied the opportunity (whether it was by you or your parents) to experience such a great school district! Don't speak trash about our school until you really know! Sincerely, A District Mother
