KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) _ Sen. Sam Brownback says the Guantanamo Bay detention center is well-run and its detainees should stay put.

The Kansas Republican, who visited the detention center last week, spoke Saturday at the Jack Reardon Center in Kansas City, Kan.

President Barack Obama has announced his intention to close the Guantanamo site and move its prisoners elsewhere, possibly the federal prison at Fort Leavenworth.

Brownback said the Guantanamo site should remain open. He doesn't want to see its detainees moved to Fort Leavenworth under any circumstances.

Brownback said moving the prisoners would delay military trials needed to resolve critical cases. He said Guantanamo prisoners also would present risks to areas around mainland prisons.
