TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ A bill closing a deal that allows construction of a coal-fired power plant in southwest Kansas has cleared a key hurdle.
The Senate Utilities Committee endorsed the measure Wednesday. Debate in the full Senate is planned Thursday.
The measure contains renewable energy proposals backed by Gov. Mark Parkinson, who brokered an agreement allowing Sunflower
Electric Power Corp. to build one coal-fired plant near Holcomb.
Sunflower had sought to build two plants but was denied an
air-quality permit from the state.
The agreement takes effect if the bill passes.
The bill requires all utilities to generate 20 percent of their electricity from renewable sources by 2020. It also has incentives for consumers to use wind- and solar-powered generators.
