Tax Director Pleaded to Charges of Fraud in Tax Scheme

The tax director of a Topeka company involved in an $84 million tax fraud scheme pleaded guilty in federal court. The scheme involved thousands of people across the country and now the justice system is starting to put the alleged schemers behind bars.

Six years ago Wednesday the IRS raided Renaissance, The Tax People, unraveling a scheme that brought in $84 million. Tuesday, the man who held the title of tax director of the company, Daniel Gleason, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the IRS and could get up to 5 years in prison and face up to half million dollars in fines on federal charges.

US Attorney Eric Melgren says Renaissance clients were urged to illegally increase the number of exemptions they claimed on their W-4 forms, so they could buy a Renaissance tax relief program.

Michael Cooper, the former head of Renaissance, left the country in June of 2003 after facing fraud charges. Federal agents seized his house and issued a warrant for his arrest. In 2004, he was arrested in Laredo, Texas, reportedly as he was coming back into the country. Now he's set to stand trial next April 2nd. A total of 8 people are now charged in the Renaissance scheme.
