TOPEKA, Kan. - The City of Topeka Police Department has released Crime Statistics for the first quarter of 2009 and it shows reported crime is once again going down.
Police Chief Ronald Miller attributes the reported crime reduction to the department’s many partnerships with the Topeka community.
“Citizen’s of Topeka understand crime is a community problem and they address crime issues as a community," Miller said. He points to community crime reduction initiatives such as Lock It, Remove It or Lose It, and Record It, Report It, Recover It that were spearheaded by Safestreets of Topeka.
“The citizens of Topeka should get credit for this reported crime reduction,” Miller said.
Compared to the first quarter in 2008, the overall crime in Topeka has been reduced by 5.35%. Most notably, auto thefts were down 34%. Chief Miller points out Topeka’s crime problem is theft, which accounts for 72% of all reported crime in Topeka.

72% of Topeka's crime is thefts and 99% of those crimes go unsolved, why don't they report that? The police department in this city is by far the worse that I have ever seen. I don't know how any of them were able to become police officers and how the chief is still the chief. I sat outside the courthouse the other day and listened to officer wilson talk trash on almost ever officer he works with, what kind of department is that? They don't even like each other...no wonder crimes are never solved here....
This is wonderful news :o) I am so happy to know this. Maybe I will not be afrid to go out after dark now!
