An 8-hour standoff ended with two men behind bars, accused of kidnapping and beating another man. Forty-three year old Ernest Smith was surrounded hours after he and 44-year old Mike Blankenship allegedly kidnapped and beat a man. Forty-two-year old Jose DeJesus Negrete Torres claims the two men had kidnapped him, beat him and then tied him up.Torres said it was all over a dispute between Smith and Torres.

Police say the two stole the victim's money and cell phone and left him in the basement. Torres said after a few hours, he was able to escape to a friends house on Golden. "When officers arrived, victims hands were still tied together. It appears he had been tied up for awhile, but he wasn't taken to the hospital." said Topeka Police Major J. Sidwell.

About an hour and a half after police arrived Blankenship surrendered, but Smith was nowhere to be found. Response teams and negotiators arrived at the scene and phones and speakers were set up to try and contact the suspect. There was still no response, so Topeka Police let out tear gas in the house at 517 Davies. "We have a warrant for his arrest for aggravated assault, kidnapping, aggravated robbery." said Maj. Sidwell. Officers were able to arrest smith without further incident.

Scott Magnet School is about a block away from the scene, police brought in two extra school resource officers as a precaution.
