An accident in Douglas County four miles east of the Osage Douglas County lines sent a Topeka man to the hospital just before 11:30 Friday night.
Authorities say Scott Greene was westbound on U.S. 56 when for unknown reasons he left the roadway on the north side.
Officials say the car then stuck a tree ejecting Greene who was not wearing a seat belt.
Green was taken to KU Medical Center by Life Star in critical condition.
