Before students at Scott Magnet School went out to play, they headed to the polls. Students were given a chance to vote in a primary election for a Mayor of "Scott City", a choice between 21 different 5th-grade candidates.
Students went through a process similar to what adults would in an election. First they presented their voter registrations. Next, students headed over to private voting booths to make their selection for the next Scott City Mayor.
Scott Magnet along with the League of Women voters holds these elections every year for the kids. "We would like to think that over time with students starting at a young age, it will carry over and if there are elections, they will show up." said Volunteer with League of Women Voters, Bob Harder.
For candidates it's a chance to see how a real election works, including choosing a platform. " I want to make more field trips and less homework, because I don't like homework." said one Candidate.
Another Candidate said, "A lot of kids don't get treated right from the other kids and I want to fix that."
It's also a chance for students to see how much each one of their vote counts. The General Election will be Tuesday, October 3, 2006.
