The Kansan who became President, then paved the way for our national interstate system, is getting a special memorial in our nation's capitol. The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts has approved a site to honor Dwight D. Eisenhower. His memorial will place Ike on the level of our nation's greatest leaders.. Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln.
The memorial will be built at the intersections of Maryland and Independence Avenues, between 4th and 6th Streets, across from the National Mall. The Memorial Commission says the memorial will be surrounded by federal institutions created or influenced by Ike's presidency from 1953 to 1961.
A pre-concept design will start the process of actually designing the new Eisenhower Memorial, with a site dedication set for 2007.
