(Topeka, KS)--After signing the required paperwork, Zaire Thomas became the official owner of the historic Sumner School site on Thursday. His financial backer, Bishop W.R. Portee, was on hand for the signing.
Portee, a minister who runs a church out of Los Angeles, CA, said he would like to rename Sumner "Sumner City." He said it is large enough to have many uses.
He hopes it will be a tourist attraction, as well as housing a workforce center, a daycare and a health and wellness center. It will also house several other community center uses.
Portee said he doesn't believe the ownership group needs to prove itself. He realizes the restoration will require millions of dollars, but points out the building has at deteriorating for years.
