Top Senate leaders want to take the task of redrawing Kansas' legislative and congressional districts out of the hands of legislators.
They announced a plan Wednesday that would give the task of
redrawing district lines to legislative research staff.
The Legislature would vote to accept or reject the proposal without
making changes. The process would be used in the redistricting that's to be done in 2012, based on the 2010 census. The bill was endorsed by the top two Senate Republicans and the Democratic leader.
House Minority Leader Paul Davis, a Lawrence Republican, also
supports the plan. But House Majority Leader Ray Merrick, a Stilwell Republican, said he doesn't see anything wrong with the current system in which the Legislature draws the lines.
