MIDLAND, Texas (CNN) -- Midland City officials said four people are dead and 17 injured Thursday, after a train struck a Show of Support parade float en route to an evening event at the Horseshoe.

Of the 17 injured, 10 are in critical condition and seven are in stable condition, officials said.

A float carrying veterans and their wives in the ninth annual Show of Support parade was struck by a eastbound train at the corner of Garfield Road and Industrial Avenue just before 5:00, said Police Chief Price Robinson.

The parade was taking 24 veterans and their spouses from the Double Tree by Hilton to the Horseshoe in south Midland.

According to officials, the trailer hit was the second being pulled along the parade route. The first trailer had already crossed the train tracks.

It is not expected those injured will need to be transferred from Midland Memorial Hospital, said hospital spokeswoman Marcy Madrid.

“All transports are complete and we have the resources and staff to take care of this,” Madrid said. “We do have the situation under control.”

The parade was supposed to lead up to the Hunt for Heroes banquet. Wounded service men were to be treated to an all-expenses paid white tail deer hunting trip this weekend, while their spouses were treated to a variety of activities in Midland.

All of Show of Support events have been canceled, said the organization’s president and founder Terry Johnson.
