Borussia Dortmund's Ricken ends playing career

DORTMUND, Germany (AP) -- Lars Ricken, who sealed Borussia Dortmund's victory over Juventus in the 1997 Champions League final, is retiring.

The 32-year-old forward has been playing for Borussia's reserves this season and also works in the club's youth department as a coordinator, a job that he will keep.

"I still feel fit but after 15 years as a professional, I think it's time to quit," Ricken said Monday.

Ricken scored Dortmund's third goal in its 3-1 win over Juventus in the 1997 final in Munich.

He was 17 when he first joined the team under then coach Ottmar Hitzfeld and played 301 Bundesliga games and scored 49 goals. He won three Bundesliga titles with Dortmund and played 16 times for Germany.

Ricken had been once considered one of Germany's top talents but frequent injuries hindered his career.
