An elderly couple is brutally beaten and robbed, and six years later the case is still unsolved. The attack took Raymond Agurrie's life and left his wife Mabel seriously wounded. Just days before this year's anniversary of the attack Mabel passed away. Now police hope her death brings life into the case.
Raymond and Mabel Agurrie shared a special bond in their more than 60 years of marriage.
"They appeared to be very nice people. They had a nice family. There were lots of people concerned about them," Detective Brian Hill.
Concern that would spike to a whole new level, after a horrific crime six years ago.
"It was determined that the attacker came in through the rear window of the house. Mabel had been in the living room praying, and her husband, Raymond, was in the backroom, where he was watching TV. They were beaten severely, and there were some items taken. The crime scene itself was pretty horrific. They had been beaten badly. It's the kind of case that angers you," said Hill.
The beating eventually killed 82 year old Raymond Aguirre and left 81 year Mabel seriously hurt, taking so much out of her, recalling the crime was a blur. Still police are hopeful someone know's something. With Mabel's passing at the Topeka Retirement Center on Saturday, police hope to honor her and Raymond's life by closing the case.
"It saddens me that she died. It's kind of ironic that it's pretty close to the anniversary date of when it occurred. It just brings this case back to the forefront. We never have forgot about it. It would be nice for someone to search their heart if they have information on the case," said Hill.
Services for Mabel Agurrie are set for Friday at 10 am at our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. If you have any information you're asked to Topeka Detectives at 368-9400.
