Kansas Senator Hopeful on Detainee Decision

FORT LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (AP) _ Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback says policymakers in Washington are beginning to slow down and think through the decision to close the Guantanamo Detainee Center.

Brownback said Monday that as more is becoming known about Fort Leavenworth and two other military sites under consideration, the better the chances that some of the 240 suspected terrorists would not be relocated to Kansas.

President Barack Obama has signed an executive order closing Guantanamo prison in Cuba within a year.

Brownback has introduced legislation to keep the detainees out of Kansas, saying it doesn't fit the fort's primary education mission and would threaten security on and off the installation.
