22-year-old Marcus Molinar suffered what Topeka Police told 13 News were life-threatening injuries when he was shot. Officers say it was a case of an argument going too far. Police responded to 422 NE Emmett about 9:20 Wednesday night. "It appeared that everybody knew everybody," says Maj. John Sidwell of the Topeka Police Department, "the witnesses were having an argument and somehow the victim of the shooting became involved in the argument and at that point in time, the suspect pulled out a weapon and shot the victim once."
AMR took Molinar to a Topeka hospital with what then were considered life threatening injuries. Thursday afternoon a family member told 13 News Molinar was shot in the stomach, but his condition has improved.
A police search for the suspect didn't last long. "While we were out looking, he showed up here at the station," Sidwell says, "the detectives normally are sitting there, trying to talk to witnesses, find out who the person is, trying to build a case against them and when they come in, that shortcuts the whole system."
Police booked a 14-year-old juvenile into the Shawnee County Juvenile Department of Corrections, charging him with aggravated battery. "It's an unfortunate situation," Sidwell says, "this is the type of things that do happen when juveniles have guns, they don't fully understand the implications of what could happen." Police say they'll hand the case over to the Shawnee County District Attorney's Office for prosecution.
